Backpacking 101 Workshop: Special Guest - Jessica "Dixie" Mills

In 2015, Jessica Mills left her job and life of stability in Colorado to pursue a lifelong dream: thru hiking the Appalachian Trail. It was there that she adopted the trail name “Dixie” (from her Southern roots) and fell in love with backpacking. After completing the Appalachian Trail, she decided to go for the Pacific Crest Trail and Continental Divide Trail, earning her what is known as the “Triple Crown” of the backpacking world. She documented her adventures on her popular YouTube channel, Homemade Wanderlust, where she continues to release regular tutorial videos, how-to, gear reviews, and other helpful references for both new and experienced backpackers.

Join us at Blue Blaze Brewing for a chance to hear Dixie talk about her time on the trail and what’s in store for her next! The talk will begin at 7pm in the brewhouse with an opportunity for meet and greet beginning earlier at 4pm in the taproom. There will be live music from MarDe Brooks, tasty eats from a local food truck, and the chance to sip on some of your favorite trail- themed beer.

Space for the talk is very limited and tickets are available for pre-sale. Admission is $7 in advance per person and $10 per person at the door. Tickets available through Eventbrite and the link is in this event description. Seating is limited, so feel free to bring your own lawn chair, camp chair, or butt pad.

Backpacking 101 Workshop: Panelist Q&A

For this month's workshop, we want YOU to choose the topics of discussion! A panel of long distance, experienced hikers will be on site with their favorite backpacking gear, armed with the best stories about what it is like to live out of a tent. Come on by and ask any questions that come to mind. Just how often does a thru hiker manage to shower? How many pairs of shoes does one go through on the AT? How many calories can a hiker consume in one sitting after finishing a 20 mile day? Ask all this and whatever else comes to mind!

Participation in this event is FREE. The purchase of a beer (or two, or three) is encouraged. This workshop is open to experienced backpackers and newbies alike. We hope to see you there!

The great outdoors can be a wonderful place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and stresses from everyday life. However, spending time in the wilderness, especially doing overnight backpacking trips, can be difficult and unnerving, not to mention dangerous, to those new to the experience. Here at Blue Blaze Brewing, we want to encourage folks to get outside and experience the serenity of nature by providing tips on safety and backpacking techniques. We are excited to be hosting monthly backpacking workshops with experienced backpacker and Appalachian Trail thru hiker, Heidi Nisbett.

Artist Reception: Roni Langley

Charlotte born and raised, artist Roni Langley draws inspiration from the North Carolina coast for her beach art series True Blue Tide. Although she’s been painting since she was in middle school, it wasn’t until summer of 2018 that she turned her passion into product and started her own small business making mixed media Resin art. This particular medium is well known for being tricky to master and hard to predict, but yields stunning results when done well. One year later Roni has now graduated college and works as a technical Writer for a local IT company but in her spare time she keeps up her business at home. When asked why she didn’t make art her full time job Roni said, “I love being creative, but if this was my only job, it wouldn’t be passion anymore - it would be obligation. I’m finding the balance between doing what I love, and making sure I don’t stop loving it.” Beyond being an artist Roni is involved in her local church and helps her mom raise Boykin Spaniel puppies. Recently she’s started hosting ‘Paint and Sip’ parties as a new way to share her passion with other people. Speaking on her art Roni says, “the best part of being an artist is knowing that people look at my work and smile, or are reminded of joyful memories at the beach. Being creative makes me happy, so it’s a nice bonus that my art can make other people happy as well.”

Artist statement:
Some of my favorite memories growing up are from my family beach vacations. Nothing made me happier than swimming in those rolling blue waves. When I started doing Resin art, I experimented with a lot of different colors and styles but was always drawn back to blues and greens. Painting the ocean and waves gives me a small piece of the same joy I get being there in the water.

Artist Reception: Cari Anne Schlie

Join us for an opportunity to see original artwork by Charlotte Artist, Cari Anne Schlie as her show comes to a close.

This installation encourages the viewer to conceptualize how their personal footprint is connected to not only local communities, but global ecosystems as well. We live in a point in history where it is more important than ever to, yes, be mindful of our consumption and do obvious things like recycle, but also to vote in such a way as to protect our environment and to invite larger systemic change by holding large scale polluters accountable. If you are passionate about art or music, then you have the potential to be an artist or musician. If you appreciate nature, then you have the potential to be a conservationist.

About the Artist:

Whether it’s a day hike, overnight camping trips, fly fishing in a stream, or just a daily stroll on the greenway, Cari is outdoors as much as possible. She is currently training for this summer’s honeymoon hike, a 580+ mile trek through Washington along the PCT. She originally fell in love with hiking while attending Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, where she studied music and psychology.
After spending seven years in healthcare, Cari has recently transitioned into the field of behavioral health therapy, where she works with small children on the autism spectrum. All along, she has also fostered her passion for making both music and art. In addition to periodically playing her harp at weddings, she is the president of the Charlotte chapter of the American Harp Society and organizes events to showcase the abilities of both student and professional musicians. In terms of visual art, she enjoys working with acrylic and palette knives because the action of moving the paint with the knife feels visually equivalent to improvisation in music.
